Knowing that Ford Motor Company, Toyota North America, General Motors, or another manufacturer has issued a recall is useful.
But knowing that a specific vehicle sitting 10 miles from your client’s service drive has an open recall right now?
That’s ACTIONABLE.
And there’s a pretty important difference between the two.
A recall doesn’t necessarily mean every vehicle is affected
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA issues roughly 1000 safety recall campaigns each year and those campaigns can be incredibly specific.
They might include certain models, model years, production dates, manufacturing plants, equipment configurations, or other criteria.
That means two vehicles that look nearly identical can have completely different recall statuses.
One might have an open recall.
The other might not be included in the campaign at all.
And another might have been affected originally, but already had the repair completed.
Looking at make, model and year can get you close.
The VIN tells you about the actual recall status of the vehicle.
That's why RecallHQ starts with the VIN.
VIN-specific recall data allows us to identify the vehicles that actually have open recalls and provide the available information associated with those campaigns.
Now imagine you're working with a dealership and have 25,000 vehicles in the surrounding market.
The question isn't:
“Are there recalls affecting vehicles like these?”
Of course there are.
The much more valuable question is:
“Which of these 25,000 vehicles have an open recall today?”
Now you have something you can act on.
For dealerships, that could mean identifying conquest recalled vehicles around their service centers.
For fleets, it could mean knowing exactly which vehicles need immediate attention.
For automotive technology platforms, it could mean adding VIN-level recall intelligence to data and workflows they already manage.
Same recall information. Much different level of usefulness.
And that's exactly what we're going to dig into with Junk in the Trunk: little pieces of automotive data, recall intelligence, safety information and industry insight that might be more useful than they first appear.
Because sometimes the best stuff is buried in the trunk.
